Minister's Message
from Rev. Theresa Kime

May 2008

This month, as spring takes hold and we begin more and more to enjoy the outdoors and the beauty of nature, we also take time to remember loved ones who have died — those in the military and due to wars as well as family members, friends, and public figures. And for our Sunday service over Memorial Day weekend, I add to that list our pets, those wonderful creatures who often teach us a lot about life and “best practices” for a meaningful one. I invite you to think about the pets you’ve known and to bring a photo or remembrance of one or two to our service so that we might honor that life and the spiritual teachings it offered.

May is also a time to claim our own lives and feel the renewal of energy and enthusiasm for offering our own particular gifts to bless our world. As nature blossoms forth, we, too, are called to find ways to blossom.

The spiritual exploration classes I am offering in May combine these two reminders of May — appreciation for our life and recognition of our death. On Sat. May 10 will be Part One, Preparing for our Parting, a exploration of health care directives, end of life options and care, and wishes for these and our memorial services. Part Two, Creating a Legacy of Blessing, offers the chance to consider how we can leave behind memories of caring and generosity — how to live now.

No matter your age or life circumstances, these are important considerations. Having worked as a hospice chaplain now for over two years, I have seen the positive impact patients can provide their families and friends with when they have consciously considered these matters, and the struggles that happen when they haven’t. I hope you will join me in this class, exploring this amazing and life-affirming work.

Blessings to you all during this wonderful month of May,

Terry
